For those looking for a hair transplant, there are plenty of options available these days. The most modern technique that is used quite a lot is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). It is a relatively new procedure and was introduced only a few years back.

It is characterized by better results, lesser invasiveness and fewer days of down time after the surgery has taken place. But how exactly does the procedure go? The working of the FUE is explained below.

Planning Hair Transplant

The hair transplant surgeon plans for the FUE procedure keeping a number of factors in mind. These include what kind of density the patient is looking for, how many grafts can be taken the donor area and how to achieve the desired results of the transplant.

Extraction of Follicular Units

The hair follicles are extracted from the donor sites (mostly back and side of the head) for the purpose of transplant. Traditionally these were acquired with the process of cutting a strip of scalp but in FUE, the task is performed by punching individual follicular units out. The process takes place with local anesthesia being administered. The general size of this follicular unit is 1mm. This can be done both manually and with the help of robots. The time taken for the extraction and the eventual results produced by each of the methods may vary.

Preparing the Recipient Site

The recipient site is the area where the follicular units are to be transplanted. The surgeon makes very small incisions in this area with the help of a scalpel or specialized needles. It is important the utmost care is given during the process as the direction of the hair depends on these incisions. There is bleeding during this part of the procedure. Like the extraction, the preparation of the recipient site is done under local anesthesia.

Insertion of Grafts

Once the grafts have been extracted and the recipient site has been prepared, the next step is to place these grafts in the incisions made. Each graft is carefully placed in the incisions. It takes a fair amount of time and the patient needs to remain patient. The process can take up to eight hours and depending on the number of grafts, further sessions may be required.
